Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the New York Mets want to hire John Mallee?
The Mets dismissed their director of hitting Jeff Albert after the 2026 season and are looking to fill a hitting staff vacancy. Mallee is on their list of interviewees and could be offered the director of hitting role, giving him a chance to be the top boss in the hitting department again.
What did the 2026 Chicago Cubs offense accomplish during the regular season?
The 2026 Cubs set a modern franchise record with a team wRC+ of 114 and led all of MLB with 850 runs scored. They also ranked third in home runs with 220 and second in MLB with a .339 team OBP.
Which Cubs players publicly credited John Mallee for their success in 2026?
Pete Crow-Armstrong gave Mallee credit during the season, and veteran third baseman Alex Bregman also singled out Mallee after a resurgent second half. A fan also caught Dansby Swanson getting extra work with Mallee at Wrigley Field right before Swanson went on a historic tear.
What is John Mallee's coaching history before rejoining the Cubs?
Mallee first reached the MLB level with the then-Florida Marlins in 2010 and has since worked with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Angels. He also served as a hitting coach on Joe Maddon's Cubs staff from 2015 to 2017 before returning for his second stint with Chicago.
Are the Chicago Cubs planning to make major coaching changes heading into the 2027 season?
There are no indications the Cubs want to move on from Mallee, and hitting coach Dustin Kelly appears to be returning as the primary hitting coach in 2027. So far it does not sound like the Cubs will be making any major changes to their coaching staff.
